President Provides Additional Details on Climate Meeting

The White House this week released additional details on the international meeting on climate change that was announced to the media last week.

Under the President's proposal, the United States will convene the major emitters and energy consumers to agree upon a new framework by the end of 2008 that would include a long-term global goal for cutting greenhouse gas emissions after the Kyoto Protocol expires in 2012.

The President's plan calls for national commitments from the participants to promote clean energy technologies and stronger programs that address sustainable land management practices, energy efficiency, and global transfer of clean energy technologies.

Invited to the September meeting are representatives from the European Union and the United Nations as well as Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, France, Germany, India, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Russia, South Africa, South Korea, and the United Kingdom.
